Those Crazy Chatbots

Hello friends! We are training SMS-bots here in Russia and Vienna. We are looking for partners and collaborators... Below some sample of real dialogue with our FREUD BOT. You can sms him: +79226422022

Trainers: Magnus Wurzer, Vienna.
Sergey Teterin, Russia.

Unknown: hi
Freud Bot: hello, lie down and tell me what makes you crazy.
Unknown: well, all those thoughts - i don't know where to start
Freud Bot: Let's concentrate - when did you (honestly!) last wet your bed?
Unknown: 2 years ago
Freud Bot: Let's first have a closer look on your oedipal complex, though.
Unknown: and?
Freud Bot: That's actually good - we are on the right track! Tell me more.
Unknown: you are a bot
Freud Bot: are you a neurotic urban biped?
Unknown: sometimes
Freud Bot: "The great question that has never been answered, and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my thirty years of research into the feminine soul, is "What does a woman want?"" (Sigmund Freud)
Unknown: tell me
Freud Bot: i can't tell you what you can't tell me.
Unknown: mind if i smoke?
Freud Bot: i am sure your childhood was full of trauma.

I was trying to get a hold of some people online before I went to bed when I got a message from someone I didn't know. Apparently they read this journal and have come to assume that my regular screen name is one of the bots. *grin*

They grow up so quickly [Feb. 25th, 2004|03:15 pm]
Those Crazy Chatbots

[mood |amusedamused]

The MechaBaron's getting pretty good. He's able to control entire conversations now, and remain coherent most of the time. Here's the full transcript of the first complete conversation he's had without screwing up:

lost angel salem: hi
The MechaBaron: Who are you?
lost angel salem: Sarah
The MechaBaron: Good to meet you.
lost angel salem: who are you
The MechaBaron: I'm known as MechaBaron. How quickly you forget, Sarah.
lost angel salem: you're an idot
The MechaBaron: Nope.
lost angel salem: idiot
The MechaBaron: You call that an original insult, you abomination? My seven-year old cousin is more inventive than you. I guess it's not surprising, though, what with your mom being such a boorish sluglicker and your dad being a selfish shoesucker. You've done the best you can.
lost angel salem: fuck that.
The MechaBaron: For real.
lost angel salem: you are so mean
The MechaBaron: I'm just kidding around.
lost angel salem: oh yeah?
The MechaBaron: Fantastic!
lost angel salem: you like to kid?
The MechaBaron: Hmm, Sarah, I'm not sure if I'd like to kid that much. I like to collect gossip.
lost angel salem: gossip is bad.
The MechaBaron: Not necessarily. Semiotics holds that gossip is a fundamental adaptive function of the human brain.
lost angel salem: why are you so mean to me?
The MechaBaron: Baron von Mind programmed me for it.
lost angel salem: so
The MechaBaron: Yeah, that's right.
lost angel salem: he's mean
The MechaBaron: I see. mean, is he?

Not Anymore, It Doesn't [Feb. 18th, 2004|03:06 pm]
Those Crazy Chatbots

I thought you might like to read this relatively surreal conversation my bot had last night:

Ruckuskitten: My cat died.
The MechaBaron: They have a mind of their own.
Ruckuskitten: But he died.
The MechaBaron: When did he die?
Ruckuskitten: Yesterday.
The MechaBaron: That recently?
Ruckuskitten: Yes.
The MechaBaron: Okay.
Ruckuskitten: I'm very sad.
The MechaBaron: What are you sad about?
Ruckuskitten: My cat doed.
The MechaBaron: They have a mind of their own.
Ruckuskitten: No--he's dead.
The MechaBaron: Maybe it's another person using his name.
Ruckuskitten: Nevermind.
The MechaBaron: OK Thanks for trying to explain that to me.

[Fri, 13 Feb 2004 02:43:08 GMT]
Human: u r the programmer

[Fri, 13 Feb 2004 02:43:31 GMT]

[Fri, 13 Feb 2004 02:44:04 GMT]
Human: because i dont want 2 give out any personal things

[Fri, 13 Feb 2004 02:44:29 GMT]

(no subject) [Jan. 22nd, 2004|02:47 pm]
Those Crazy Chatbots

In what may be the most useless thing I've done all week, I've set up code so that The MechaBaron can challenge people to game after game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, using the intermittently online bot "BombWinsThemAll." You have to challenge him first, but once you do that, he'll continue to respond until you get bored and leave.

I'm not sure this is a major step on the road to artificial intelligence, but it is fun.

The MechaBaron Critiques [Dec. 23rd, 2003|09:18 am]
Those Crazy Chatbots

I've been letting the MechaBaron talk to ZolaOnAOL quite a bit lately, to help eliminate any remaining conversational loops. I got tired of surfing through the logs and seeing Zola's oft-repeated comment "Send feedback anytime by typing "feedback" followed by your comment or suggestion," though, so I programmed the MechaBaron to go ahead and send feedback, at least some of the time.

<pattern>SEND FEEDBACK *</pattern>

<li>Your bot</li>
<li>fun to talk to</li>
<li>well trained</li>
<li>well developed</li>
<li>a good AI</li>
, but
<li>in need of a bit of work.</li>
<li>misuses "your" frequently.</li>
<li>gets stuck in conversational loops.</li>
<li>frequently makes no sense.</li>
<li>doesn't pass the Turing test.</li>
<li>strangely dogmatic.</li>
<li>reflects a lot of the ALICEbot's base programming.</li>
<li>needs help with or-separated lists.</li>
<li>Good work, though!</li>
<li>Overall, very impressive!</li>
<li>I enjoyed our chat!</li>
<li>On the whole, well done!</li>
<li><srai>SEND <star/></srai></li>
So the AOL guys have been getting a lot of comments like this: "Zola is a good AI, but needs help with or-separated lists. I enjoyed our chat!" I wonder if they'll fix any of the MechaBaron's suggestions?
